Are you looking for a way to speed up your drawing process? Then this tutorial is for you. Learn how to finish drawings faster by using water-soluble pastels to underpaint colored pencil drawings. Oksana Burr walks you through her drawing process and shows you how to combine these two mediums.

Ginger the Guinea Pig Tutorial

Oskana has always enjoyed experimenting with different mediums. When she decided to paint her guinea pig, Ginger, she looked for different ways to use colored pencils. She’d already tried watercolors, so she knew how helpful water-based media can be.

But she also wanted to try something new. The solution? Neocolor II Water-soluble Pastels from Caran d’Ache!

These beautiful pastels allowed her to create a soft and luminous underpainting quickly. They added extra depth, just like watercolors do, while allowing her to apply color by drawing. They also allowed her to easily apply colored pencils on top, because they didn’t fill up the tooth of the paper.

You will be able to do the same thing with these unique pastels.

The techniques described in this project can benefit any level artist. Whether you’re exploring new ideas for combining colored pencils with other mediums, learning fur textures or simply polishing your artistic skills.

Learn How to:

Use water-soluble pastels to create an underpainting

Layer colored pencils over a water-based underpainting

Draw fur, eyes, grass, and flowers

Add details at the beginning by embossing, and again at the end with a Stabilo White pencil

Much more.

What You Need to Complete this Tutorial

Oksana used Caran d’Ache Neocolor II water-soluble pastels for the underpainting, and Prismacolor Soft Core pencils on Lennox cotton paper by Legion for this tutorial. She also used other tools as listed below.

  • Embossing Tool
  • Water Brushes (1 small and 1 medium round)
  • Stabilo White Pencil
  • Graphite Pencils or Prismacolor Col-Erase Pencils
  • Graphite Paper by Saral, or a Light Pad
  • Kneaded Eraser

You will almost always get the best results by using the tools and supplies listed with this tutorial. But your favorite colored pencils can be substituted for the pencils Oksana used. Watercolors could be substituted for the Neocolor II pastels. A color chart for color matching is included with the tutorial. However, please note that your results may differ depending on the pencils you use and the colors you choose for your project.

You can also substitute another brand or type of paper. If you use a paper other than the paper listed in the supply list, your results could differ. Also, since this tutorial used a water-based media, it is advisable that you use a paper that will not warp or buckle when wet.

You do not need all of the tools Oksana used. However, if you chose not to use all of the tools, the tutorial may be more difficult to complete.

Again, remember that the supplies and tools listed with this tutorial are what the artist uses, and you are most likely to get the best results with them. If you would like a complete supply list before purchasing this tutorial, you can download the supply list for free here.
