It Started with Horse Portraits

Carrie L. Lewis has been painting and drawing for over 40 years. Her interest in art began very early, with parents providing crayons and paper. She sold her first horse portrait at the age of seventeen and has been creating beautifully detailed portraits of horses for clients all over the United States ever since.

Her oil painting technique is based on the work Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) and William Bouguereau (1825-1905).

“Classical art has been a love since my first encounter with it. The works of such Great Masters as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Bouguereau have the ability to stir the soul and inspire my own creativity like no other art form.

“I suppose, given those two passions, it was natural that I should eventually learn and adapt the techniques of those Old Masters to my own attempts at capturing the spirit of the horse in oils.”

Enter Colored Pencils

In the late 1990s, Carrie began doing more colored pencil work, which is now her primary medium. Her favorite subjects are still horses, but she now also draws landscapes.

In 2015, Carrie’s focus shifted from portrait work to teaching through her blog. The selection of tutorials and online courses is always expanding as she explores new methods, subjects, and tools.

CP Magic

In 2020, she launched CP Magic, an e-zine for colored pencil artists around the world. The magazine features artist interviews, demonstrations, and regular columns.
